I like these guys, while I don't really care for the Pokémon tv-series itself.
I never watched any episodes as a child, but for some reason I did have the first movie, and I guess that introduced me to the only characters I should know, really. Both Mew and Mewtwo are awesome.
Having that said, it isn't hard to see that every portrayal of both Mew and Mewtwo after their first movie is utter shit. Before those all those new generations started entering the picture, I personally thought it was already going downhill.
Mewtwo wasn't even able to fight off Team Rocket in his second movie and Mew sounded like a retarded cat in its second movie, and never got its sweet voice back ever again.
And every other clip starring Mewtwo shows how easily defeated he is every time.
As the Pokémon series progressed, more and more Pokémon started entering the picture, including some that suddenly make the existence of Mew and Mewtwo a whole lot less interesting.
For example, all of the sudden this Pokémon, "Arceus", is called the mother/father of all Pokémon, while before that, Mew pretty much had that role. But fine, being an "ancestor" doesn't necessarily mean you're the creator of all, I guess.
But then there's Mewtwo, who states at least over a million times that he is the strongest Pokémon ever, including the scientists who created him, but many people vote for Arceus in that category as well. And before that, they voted for Lugia.
Pretty much every Pokémon that got shat out after the first generation is suddenly better than the first generation, and my nostalgic love for the first batch makes it hard for me to swallow that. Not because I don't believe it, though.
I'd just love to see Mewtwo blow up some more people and for Mew to "mew". I miss being reminded how great those two are.

I agree with the point you make about every new gen pokemon being stronger is bullshit, and it actually DOESN'T make any sense at all. I mean the legendary pokemon get a pass because they're "legendary" for a reason, but the way Pikachu pretty much starts out in every new area like it's his first time in a fight, despite having just beaten the previous areas league champions, makes no sense whatsoever. Even if you wanted to argue that the new areas Pokemon were so different Pikachu would need time to adapt to their fighting styles and abilities, in practice that logic doesn't hold up. A master martial artist of one style may not completely understand another style, but that doesn't mean he's going to get his ass handed to him by a novice of that other style. Pikachu's experience against a diversity of opponents should have made him ready for anything and extremely adaptable. This logic doesn't really apply in THE GAME however, which most fans consider canon. In the game, a ratata could beat MewTwo given a high enough level, HOW it was leveled (rare candy leveling yields lower stat gains), and what abilities it has. The trick with MewTwo isn't beating him however, it's getting him down to -10 HP WITHOUT killing him so you can catch him using a standard Pokeball. This is the ultimate challenge in Red and Blue.
